Originally conceived for the 2025 Venice Architecture Biennale, KIDA Porch emerged from a collaboration between Stephen Burks and Malika Leiper that explored the cultural significance of the American porch as a place of gathering, conversation and connection. Inspired by this enduring social space, the collection introduces a new quilted cushion system that envelops the familiar KIDA silhouette with warmth, texture and personality.
At the heart of the design is a deep appreciation for the celebrated quilting tradition of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Drawing from the visual richness and expressive compositions of these handcrafted textiles, the designers developed a layered upholstery system that transforms the collection into something both familiar and unexpected. Carefully composed fabric panels create a patchwork aesthetic that feels artistic yet approachable, celebrating the beauty of making by hand.
The generous quilted cushions soften KIDA’s distinctive wrapped frame, creating a more cocooning experience without diminishing the collection’s sculptural identity. Two independent quilted layers, enhanced with foam inserts and connected through discreet fastening systems, provide exceptional comfort while introducing visual depth and tactile richness. The result is a seating experience that encourages guests to linger, relax and engage with their surroundings.
Beneath the upholstery lies the original KIDA structure, handcrafted by DEDON’s master weavers in the Philippines using the brand’s innovative wrapped fibre technique. This meticulous craftsmanship contributes to the collection’s unique character while ensuring long-term durability for outdoor living.
