Sea and desert landscapes shape two contrasting spaces at Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai.
Silverfox Studios | Overlooking the shores of the Arabian Gulf, Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai occupies a prominent beachfront setting along one of the city’s most desirable stretches of coastline. While Dubai is often associated with its dynamic urban skyline, the surrounding natural landscape remains defined by two contrasting environments: the vast desert that stretches inland and the calm waters of the Gulf that shape the city’s coastline. Within the resort, these two defining elements of the region are reflected through a pair of complementary spaces — The Bay, an all-day dining restaurant inspired by the openness of the sea, and The Spa, a tranquil wellness sanctuary shaped by the sculptural forms of the desert landscape.

Positioned along the beachfront, The Bay is conceived as the hotel’s three-meal dining venue, structured around a vibrant live kitchen environment. The restaurant brings together a number of interconnected culinary stations including a bakery, oriental kitchen, bar lounge and verandah seating area, allowing the space to adapt throughout the day as service transitions from breakfast to lunch and evening dining. These areas are designed to function independently or as a unified dining space, responding to the changing rhythms of the restaurant’s operation.
The interiors emphasise openness and visual connectivity, establishing a strong dialogue between the dining room and the surrounding coastal landscape. Vertical and horizontal screening elements subtly divide the space while maintaining filtered views across the restaurant, creating layers of activity that unfold between the kitchen, dining areas and the verandah beyond. At the centre of the space, the buffet counters operate as active culinary stations, where chefs prepare dishes throughout the day in full view of guests. Rather than functioning as a traditional buffet display, the kitchen becomes a continuous working stage, bringing the energy of food preparation into the dining experience.

Towards the edge of the restaurant, the bar and verandah open towards expansive views of the beach and sea. Here the interior atmosphere softens as the dining space transitions toward the outdoors, reinforcing the restaurant’s connection to its coastal setting and allowing the surrounding landscape to form part of the overall experience.
While The Bay celebrates the openness and vitality of the shoreline, The Spa explores a more contemplative atmosphere inspired by the desert landscapes that extend beyond the city. Spread across more than 2,000 square metres, the spa offers a comprehensive wellness experience including nine treatment rooms, couples’ suites, a dedicated hammam-style suite and a private VIP treatment room.

The interior concept draws inspiration from the desert landscapes that surround Dubai, including the shifting patterns of wind-shaped sand dunes and the sculptural forms of desert flora. In particular, the geometry of desert cactus plants, with their spiralling leaf formations and layered structures, informed the architectural language of the space. These natural references appear throughout the spa in the form of sweeping curves and softly layered surfaces that guide movement through the interior.

Upon arrival, the spa reception introduces this sculptural language through flowing ceiling forms and curved walls that create semi-private consultation areas, establishing a calm and immersive environment from the outset. From here, gently winding circulation corridors lead guests deeper into the spa, echoing the fluid contours found in desert landscapes.
Natural materials and warm tonal palettes reinforce the sense of tranquillity, gradually leading to the treatment suites where the design reaches its most serene expression. Within the treatment studios, large windows frame views of the sea and beach, allowing natural light to enter the calm interiors while subtly reconnecting the spa experience with the coastal environment beyond.

Additional wellness areas include a relaxation lounge with meditation pods and a vitality room inspired by the movement of water, where curved marble walls surround a central hydrotherapy pool. Together with the changing rooms and supporting facilities, these spaces create a layered sequence of environments designed to promote relaxation and renewal.
Within Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai, The Bay and The Spa present two complementary interpretations of the region’s landscape. One reflects the openness and social energy of the coastline, while the other draws upon the sculptural calm of the desert. Together they form a pair of spaces that capture the contrasting natural environments that continue to shape Dubai’s identity.
